Perm is the city in the upcountry of Russia spreading along the both banks of Kama river. In the near past the city was closed for visitors because of its military industry. Walking down the streets you will realize that Perm is a theatrical city. The residents are specially proud of the Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre named after P. Chaikovaskiy. It has a reputation of a cradle of contemporary Russian opera and is considered the third ballet “Mecca” of the country after Moscow and St. Petersburg.
Central streets, squares, museums and historic landmarks, theatres and university buildings will very well inform the visitors about the city and its life. These buildings have witnessed different events. They reflect the fortunes and stories of many outstanding people. Nikolay Slavyanov, Alexandr Popov, Sergey Dyagilev, Boris Pasternak, Viktor Astafiev – the lives of these people are closely connected with our city and Perm is proud of them. Unfortunately Perm has become of the sites in the series of tragic events connected with murdering the Romanovs dynasty. In 1990s in village Kuchino, located near Chusovoj, a Memorial museum was established. The building of the museum used to be a work camp. So establishing this museum was meant to perpetuate prisoners tortured and killed during repressions. "Perm-36" was characterized by a very severe regimen in comparison with other political camps. The most "dangerous" dissidents and distributors of anticommunist literature, participants of remedial groups, religious, national and other organizations were imprisoned here. The last political prisoner was released in 1987.
Nowadays a few unique constructions characteristic of the totalitarianism can still be found on the area of strict regime: camp hutting, small constantly locked prison cells, punishment cells functioning as intracamp prison, fences ruins. Prison yards bound with iron and watchtowers covered with barbed wire were restored. On the industrial area where the prisoners worked there are preserved buildings of workshops, smithery, powersaw bench, stokehole, administrative buildings, diesel powerplant, lavatory and a log construction of so called duty –a checkpoint between a dwelling zone and the industrial area. There is also a camp management building there. Most buildings date back to constructions of Stalin’s Gulag epoch.
